  The Middle East Before WW2  
  Auguste Henri Ponsot, the French High Commissioner of Syria and Lebanon, introduced a new constitution for the Syrian mandate. Under the new law, Syria and Latakia became republics with representative government. Latakia existed as a republic until February 28, 1937, when it was reincorporated into Syria.
