Events occurring on Monday, March 14, 1938  
  Anschluss - The German Annexation of Austria  
  German Chancellor Adolf Hitler arrived in Austria and took formal possession of the former republic. Hitler announced that the new government would hold a national plebiscite on April 10. Simultaneously, the Germans arrested the political opposition and imprisoned most of them in concentration camps. Former Austrian Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg accepted arrest and remained in confinement without trial.  
   
  The Third Reich and Czechoslovakia  
  With the incorporation of Austria into the German Reich, the German government gave assurances to the Czechoslovak government of the German desire to improve relations between the two states. The French and Soviet governments categorically declared their intentions to honor their treaty obligations for the defense of Czechoslovakia.
