  Allied Submarine Warfare in the Pacific  
  The submarine USS Greenling (SS 213), commanded by Lt. Commander James D. L. Grant, torpedoed and sank the 1,936 ton Japanese transport ship Shoho Maru in the eastern Caroline Islands.  
  The submarine USS Herring (SS 233), commanded by Lt. Commander Raymond W. Johnson, begins an attack on a Japanese convoy approximately 430 miles southeast of Shingu, Japan.
